For this second project with the Maison de Naissance, I used the same palette as in their stairwell, and created a series of murals based on the idea that it takes a village to raise a child. Five murals line their hallway, one between each of the midwives’ offices. Expecting and new families will pass through this hallway when meeting with their midwife, guiding them through their birthing process. The project also included a mural as a frame for where Polaroids of the families with their children are posted, and another that decorates a play area where families await their appointments.

Each composition has a large circle, which represents the child. Each child is layered with ovals, which represent the parents and people in the child’s community who work together to raise them. Some ovals are not superimposed directly on the circle, but on the other ovals. They represent people who play a role in the child’s happiness and health, but who are not directly involved in the child’s life. These can be friends of parents or people in  the outside community, who also contribute to the ability of parents to care for the child safely and successfully. The ribbons that cross over each design represent the paths that the children and their families will take during their lives.
